Included are: Teddy Wilson representing swing piano, Earl Hines, the father of jazz piano improvisation, Lennie Tristano, as an exponent of modern exploratory piano playing, and Bill Evans and John Lewis, two of the most lyrical modern pianists. Jaki Byard, alternating free and stride passages on the same tune--filled out this historical lineup.
